Punat is a settlement located on the south of the island of Krk, only 8 kilometers away from the city of Krk. First evidence of the Punat's population date back in the time of prehistory, to the times of Illyrians, Greeks and Romans. It is considered that the name ''Punat'' is taken from the Latin word ''Pons'', which means the bridge, because it's possible that once, there was a bridge that connected the narrow passage to the Punat valley, from the south. For the first time, the name itself was mentioned in written documents back in 1377. Economic base was once consisted out of agriculture, viticulture, fishing, olive-growing and shipbuilding, especially in the wood, and today the main business is tourism, especially the nautical kind of one. From the old activities, still active are fishing and sheep, and almost every family in Punat is occupied with olive growing. Before the entrance to the settlement, there is a small island called Košljun.
Punat- once a well know woodenship-building place and center of the powerful steamship company is today a famous touirst destination, all thanks to huge number of people visiting the island of Košljun, and as well as one of the best equipped touristic seascapes on the east coast of the Adriatic sea. Thanks to the work of the Punat marine and events such as regata Croatia cup of the Days of olives, Punat is visited troughout the entire year, out of the months of the main season. Nicely decorated beaches and parks, rich vegetation, hotels, villas, apartments, different types of activities, sport (diving, surfing, tennis, water park, sailing, hiking, fresh home made food offered in many restaurants – make Punat a very visited tourist center of the island.
