Orebic

Orebić is a town on the southwest side of Pelješac peninsula in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Orebić and 13 smaller settlements form the Orebić municipality. Orebić has around 2000 inhabitants, while the whole municipality has around 4000 inhabitants. Orebić was named after a noble family which played a very important part in the history and development of the town. Orebić is the biggest settlement on Pelješac, situated at the foot of Sveti Ilija hill, opposite of the town of Korčula on the island of Korčula. Orebić is connected to the town of Korčula with a ferry line. Even though it is located on a peninsula, Orebić has most characteristics of a true island settlement, as well as a strong maritime tradition. A shipyard was built in Orebić in 1875. For most of its past, Orebić was under the rule of the Dubrovnik Republic. Nowadays, there is a Maritime Museum in Orebić, which tells the story of the town’s glorious maritime history. Today, Orebić is mostly a tourist place. Only a few inhabitants are still in seafaring or agriculture. Many old captains’ houses have been refurbished and turned into tourist-accommodation units. The inhabitants of Orebić turned their town into a tourist destination with all the necessary contents such as the ferry port, hotels, camps, market, entertainment and sport contents, numerous apartments, villas, restaurants and taverns. Many pebble and a few sand beaches also fuelled the development of tourism in Orebić municipality. Apart from tourism, wine growing and production are the most important economic activities in Orebić. Orebić municipality is the home of the most famous locations for growing one of the best-quality and most famous Croatian type of grapes Plavac Mali (Dingač and Postup).
